Off-Leash Dog Areas in Scottsdale, AZ
Exploring dog park amenities and dog parks Scottsdale AZ

Dog lovers in Scottsdale can finally celebrate the arrival of more off-leash dog areas, with a long-awaited park nearing completion in North Scottsdale.

For years, area residents have watched as fences, heavy equipment, and orange cones signaled progress — and sometimes delays — on the new Thompson Peak Dog Park.

Set near Hayden Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, this expansive project aims to become a new hub for four-legged friends and their humans.

Anticipation has run high, with neighbors voicing both excitement and impatience over multiple construction setbacks and cost increases.

According to city officials, the Thompson Peak Dog Park was made possible through a voter-approved bond measure, reflecting local priorities around quality of life and pet-friendly spaces.

The park boasts a range of impressive dog park amenities, including three fenced play zones, shaded canopies, and new restrooms.

Visitors will also find benches, water fountains, convenient pet waste stations, and even an upgraded parking area—features designed to add comfort and ease for both pups and owners.

A footbridge is planned to connect the new off-leash dog area with other recreational offerings in the park, giving families and their dogs new ways to explore and interact.

This marks a shift, as many Scottsdale neighbors have relied on Chaparral Dog Park and Horizon Dog Park for years, sometimes facing crowding or closures for turf repair.

Chaparral, known as the city’s flagship, features separated active and passive dog spaces, grassy play yards, and community gathering spots beneath mature trees.

Meanwhile, Horizon’s dog area is more modest, tucked in a basin but with plenty of shade and a cooling water feature for those blazing Arizona afternoons.

Vista del Camino offers another alternative with its petite half-acre run shaded by leafy canopies, adding variety for local dog owners looking for different experiences.

The arrival of Thompson Peak Dog Park is expected to ease pressure on existing parks, offering additional space and modern amenities while meeting the growing needs of dog owners in Scottsdale AZ.

Expect an enthusiastic turnout as the city officially cuts the ribbon for this community-driven project—proof that sometimes, patience really does pay off for Scottsdale’s most loyal residents.

Vista del Camino is still my favorite for small dogs, but will check this one out.

Vivian O.I hope so too. It only takes a few to ruin it for everyone. Would be nice if folks were more considerate this time.
